Shine.FM

Since 2018, The Shine.fm family has been the lone support for the Shine.fm Vocational Center in Malawi Africa. The Shine.fm Vocational Center is run by the River of Life Organization serving on the ground. The River of Life organization empowers young students in Malawi by providing them with opportunities to enhance their future. Students from neighboring villages enroll in our 6-month program and graduate from one of 5 vocational classes offered. Students can study Bricklaying, Carpentry, Electrical Installation, Tailoring and Welding. These are skills that aren’t taught in a traditional college education but are useful in Malawi and students can support themselves and their family. College is out of reach for many students due to extreme poverty. Here are some testimonies from students currently in the program.

Dalitso is currently enrolled in the tailoring track at the Shine.fm vocational center. She lost both her parents to HIV when she was 10. She was forced into human trafficking at 16. She met a pastor at the Global Harvest school of mission, he told her about Christ and she started a personal relationship with Jesus. The Pastor encouraged her to apply for the Vocational center. Her passion is to have a sewing machine and open a tailoring shop. This will allow her to not only provide for herself but also for her son.

Chisom lost both her parents to the HIV pandemic when she was 10. Because of that, she was raised by her grandmother who was very old. Due to the hardships, she entered prostitution at 12 and had her daughter at 15. While working as a prostitute, she met a tutor from River of Life who was distributing brochures about the organization’s programs for underprivileged youth. After learning about the programs she decided to leave prostitution and enroll in the Bricklaying classes. After graduation, she hopes to acquire her own tools, start working and train other young girls – both those that are engaged in prostitution like she was and those struggling with poverty – so they too can have a sustainable livelihood.
