Sewing Glasses: A Medical Missions Update

Medical Missions is now serving even more countries in 2026 through their Eyeglass Recycling Program. Eyeglasses have been distributed in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, Guatemala, Honduras (2 locations), the Ukraine, and Columbia!
Many of our patients who come through the clinic in San Andres de Itzapa were from the local indigenous people group. Some of our team’s favorite patients were the lovely abuelas who arrived in beautiful colorful clothing. When we complimented their blouses, skirts, and dresses, they beamed with pride and informed us that they had made them themselves. Many of them passed the visual acuity test for distance, but they were struggling to see near objects. When we told them that we would like to try to fit them with reading glasses, their faces would fall because they could not read. We assured them that these glasses would help them. “But you do sew, right?” Their faces would light up again with realization that this would indeed be helpful. We quickly switched our terminology and began offering ‘sewing glasses’ instead of readers. Before leaving, a member of our partner church shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with each of these lovely ladies. We learned that many of them placed their faith in Him that week.
