Palm Sunday: The King Who Came in Peace

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, a sacred journey that leads to the cross and ultimately to the empty tomb. It commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem—a moment filled with celebration, expectation, and deep spiritual significance.

As Jesus approached the city, He did not come with the power and pageantry many expected of a king. Instead, He rode on a humble donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah: “See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey.” The crowds gathered, laying down palm branches and cloaks along the road, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

The word “Hosanna” means “save us,” revealing the heart of the people. They longed for deliverance—perhaps from political oppression—but Jesus came to offer something far greater: salvation from sin and restoration with God.

Palm Sunday is both a celebration and a tension-filled moment. The same voices crying “Hosanna” would soon fall silent or even turn to “Crucify Him.” It reminds us how quickly human expectations can clash with God’s purposes. Jesus did not come to conquer Rome; He came to conquer sin through sacrifice.

For believers today, Palm Sunday invites reflection. Are we welcoming Jesus as He truly is, or as we wish Him to be? Are we willing to follow a King who leads through humility, service, and surrender?

The palms symbolize victory, but not the kind the world often seeks. Christ’s victory would come through the cross—a victory of love, grace, and redemption.

As we enter Holy Week, Palm Sunday calls us to lay down our own expectations and open our hearts fully to Jesus—the King who came in peace, and who still comes to save.
